Insightful, Thought‑Provoking & In‑Depth Conversations with Individuals Who Have Shaped and Are Shaping the Breed

About the project

The Noble Saluki: An Oral History Project

The Noble Saluki: An Oral History Project seeks to document and preserve meaningful conversations with individuals whose work, insight, and contributions have impacted the Saluki breed, ensuring their valuable experiences and knowledge are not lost.

The interest and passion behind this effort took root nearly four years ago, emerging from a growing awareness that the experiences of individuals within the Saluki breed were quietly slipping away. As influential figures passed, memories faded, and life‑altering events—both expected and unexpected—unfolded, important knowledge, stories, insight, and wisdom were being lost. The Noble Saluki project was created to address this need & ensuring that these purposeful conversations are recorded, preserved and made accessible for generations to come.

The project is self-funded and non-commercial. The Noble Saluki is an ongoing, living project.

Mission & Vision

Mission Statement

To document and make publicly accessible the discussions, conversations and interviews of individuals connected to the Saluki breed, safeguarding their insights and lived experiences for future generations.

Vision Statement

To create an accessible record that preserves the stories, experiences and knowledge of people who have shaped the Saluki breed.

About the Project Creator

Gretchen Krise first became aware of the Saluki breed while watching a PBS/NOVA program on the domestication of dogs, which highlighted the breed's ancient Middle Eastern origins, its strength and endurance, and distinctive characteristics.  Krise was intrigued by the breeds' historical and cultural significance, which resonated with her early education in Political Science studies with concentration in International/Middle Eastern studies.  The Salukis' functional beauty and exceptional athleticism paralleled Krise’s own passion for distance running and swimming.  Nearly twenty years ago, Krise welcomed her first Saluki into her home. In 2025, Krise completed her AKC Lure Coursing judges' education.

How It Works

Information for Guest‑Narrators & Listeners

The Noble Saluki project preserves and shares recorded discussions and perspectives of people whose experiences have shaped the Saluki community.  For listeners, it offers a direct, human connection to the breed’s history.

What It Is

The project is a collection of recorded interviews capturing people’s experiences, knowledge & shared history in their own words.

LEGACY CONVERSATIONS. IN THEIR OWN WORDS.

The Process

  • Project Goal: The initial start-up phase will require greater dedication to the mission of the project. Once the project is stabilized, the ongoing goal is to conduct two to three guests-narrated interviews each month.  Following each session, the interviewer prepares and publishes the recorded conversation, making it accessible via website and/or supported platform, along with archive of all other interviews. A back end digital library/archive will exist, as well.
  • Preparation: The interviewer and guest-narrator connect prior to the recorded interview, discussing the interview, perhaps performing a dry-run through, including testing the recording tools, platform process. Media participation waivers are signed, and other project-related tasks are completed.
  • Interviewing:  The participants - the interviewer and guest-narrator - agree to a scheduled appointment. Each participant accesses a private virtual recording session, and thereafter the interview begins.
  • Preservation & Access:  After each interview, the project team prepares the file for publication so that each recorded interview is properly preserved and made publicly accessible.

Why It Matters

The project seeks to capture meaningful conversations and offer individuals the opportunity to narrate their own legacy. By recording these firsthand accounts, the project provides listeners, participants, and the broader community with perspectives that might otherwise be lost or forgotten. It preserves and shares the wisdom of those who came before us, ensuring that their experiences and knowledge are carried forward and remain accessible to future generations.
